Puerto Rico is a particularly complicated jurisdiction from an estate and estate planning perspective. Since Puerto Rico is a separate taxing jurisdiction from the United States, tax rules that apply to individuals born in Puerto Rico will be different from the rules that apply to individuals born in the United States. Puerto Rico is also a community property and forced heirship jurisdiction. Because of this, individuals domiciled in Puerto Rico are limited as to how they can distribute their estates.
